🛍️ New Gift Shop Coming to Main Street: Noteworthy Wants and Wonders is taking over the former Bitty & Beau’s Coffee location at 305 Main Street. With plans to open by the Ann Arbor Art Fair (July 17-19), the shop will feature curated gifts for weddings, graduations, baby showers, and more. Owners Kristina Scobie and Jason Klein also run a stationery and gift business near Kalamazoo and say Ann Arbor was a natural next step.

🚗 Bryce Gives Back: Michigan 5-star QB and Belleville alum Bryce Underwood surprised his former high school security guard, Mychal Darty, with a brand-new 2025 Chevy Equinox. The $35K car, gifted through an NIL partnership with Feldman Automotive, was a thank you for Darty’s constant support and mentorship. “He sat and talked to me for 45 minutes before he even knew I could throw a football,” Underwood said. This is a wholesome 3-minute watch.

⚖️ Wage Discrimination Lawsuit: More than 300 current and former female physician assistants are suing Michigan Medicine, alleging gender-based pay disparities. The lawsuit claims women were paid on average $9,000 less than their male counterparts in similar roles, despite repeated internal advocacy and awareness. Filed in Washtenaw County Circuit Court, the case seeks back pay, lost retirement contributions, and punitive damages under state and federal law.

Big Ten Conference
🎓 Big Ten Pushes Back: Faculty senates at Big Ten universities are teaming up to form a “Mutual Defense Compact” (a proposed alliance to protect academic freedom and university independence amid growing political pressure from the Trump administration). So far, Rutgers, Nebraska, Indiana, and Michigan State have signed on. U of M’s faculty senate met this weekend to vote on the alliance, though the results haven’t been posted yet. If adopted, the compact would create a shared legal defense fund and pool resources across all 18 schools to push back against federal overreach.

📚 Chelsea’s Book Brigade: In a real-life storybook moment, 300 residents in Chelsea, MI formed a human chain to move 9,100 books, one by one, to Serendipity Books’ new location just around the corner (seriously, watch this Instagram reel). The sidewalk “book brigade” stretched down Middle Street and around to Main, with volunteers aged 6 to 91 passing titles hand-to-hand and even shelving them alphabetically. The store is set to reopen this Saturday, fittingly on National Independent Bookstore Day.

🚗 House Rep Wraps: During session this past Thursday, Rep. Julie Brixie (D-Okemos) saran-wrapped Rep. Matt Maddock’s (R-Milford) car after he parked across two spots (one being hers) in the House parking garage. Brixie called it a lighthearted jab, “Just adding extra protection to his fancy car.” Maddock and his wife weren’t amused, calling the prank “a lie” and “a crime”. No police report was filed, but the plastic-wrapped showdown added some unexpected drama to an otherwise typical day at the Michigan Capitol.
