🎨 New Bridge Mural: Treetown Murals has completed phase 2 of their art mural on either side of the railroad bridge over Huron Street. The 3rd and final phase will be to paint the walls below the bridge. For a behind-the-scenes look into the local husband and wife team’s work, here’s their Instagram post about the project. Treetown Murals has set up a GoFundMe to raise money for their next local mural, the railroad underpass on Mainstreet near M-14 and the Argo dam.
🏗️ Kline Lot To Sell: Last week City Council unanimously agreed to hire a broker to sell the Kline Lot for private development. The large lot, located on the corner of Ashley and William, has been at the center of development discussions for decades - most recently, a Sports Illustrated resort was proposed at the site. The property was last appraised at $17 million.
🏃 Emily Hobbs In Paris: Local running phenom, Hobbs Kessler, will represent Team USA in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter races in the Paris Olympics later this month. The 21-year-old Skyline graduate set a world record by running a 3:56.13 road mile last October.

🔥🪰 Fireflies Are Having A Moment: Thanks to a particularly early spring followed by a dry summer, Michigan’s firefly population is soaring. However, due to increasing light pollution and pesticide use, this is “likely the best that it’s ever going to be.” The best time to catch nature’s twinkling light show is about 10-15 minutes after dusk near vegetation and a water system.
💊 Childhood Obesity Rates: With 1 in 5 Michigan children being obese, pediatricians are considering and prescribing weight loss drugs as part of treatment in hopes of preventing conditions like diabetes and hypertension later in life. While the American Academy of Pediatrics supports drug use in extreme cases, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force urges caution, emphasizing the importance of behavioral interventions first and foremost.
🇺🇸 POTUS Campaigning: Sources report President Biden is planning a campaign stop in Detroit on Friday. Following a rocky debate performance last month, the President aims to solidify support in Michigan, a key state where he narrowly beat Trump 51%-48% in the 2020 election. Despite some Democrats urging him to step aside, Biden remains committed to the race and maintains a steadfast campaign schedule.
🔫 Church Raffle Prizes: A Grand Rapids church is making headlines for raffling off an AR-15 at their annual Independence Day celebration. During the carnival-style event, New Chapel Church aims to celebrate freedom but has drawn criticism from locals concerned about the appropriateness of offering a firearm as a prize. Pastor Joe Bevelacqua insists on the legality and safety of the raffle, emphasizing mandatory background checks and stating the church’s intention to support lawful, responsible gun ownership.
