Monday, June 17: I wish the 90s in this week’s weather forecast were a typo. Expect a brutally hot Monday - Saturday, before the weather drops to a chilly 83 on Sunday!

🍻 Moon Winks Tavern: Moon Winks Café (5151 Plymouth Rd) will soon be opening up a next-door tavern serving craft beer, spirits, wine, pizza, tacos, and sliders. While an opening date is not listed on their website, Moon Winks recently posted on Facebook and Instagram that they’re hiring servers, runners, bartenders, and managers for their “bar that is set to open soon”.

📚 AADL Summer Game: Last week the Ann Arbor District Library (AADL) kicked off a bicentennial edition of the Summer Game. An annual tradition to keep students learning during the summer, the Summer Game has grown from a kids-only seasonal reading challenge to a city-wide game for all ages that includes a real-world scavenger hunt, online code seeking, and of course, reading. Participants (both young and old) earn points that can be exchanged for prizes. Here’s a link to the AADL about how to get started.

🏗️ Building Demo: Demo has begun on 2929 Plymouth Road, a unique 1970s Alden Dow-designed building. To account for zoning restrictions and parking minimum laws, the office building was raised and constructed on columns which allowed for ground-level parking. Here’s what the building used to look like. A new University of Michigan Credit Union location will be built on the lot.

🏖️ The Beach at Campus Martius: A month and a half after hosting the NFL Draft, Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit has transformed into a beach oasis. Complete with 400,000 pounds of sand, beach chairs, and an outdoor bar, the Beach at Campus Martius is a sun-soaked getaway spot perfect for building sandcastles, listening to live music, people-watching, and more. Here’s a link with more photos and things to do at the beach.

☀️  Floating Solar Panels: Several Michigan communities (including Ann Arbor and Pittsfield Township) are exploring the possibility of floating solar panels. A relatively new technology, floating solar panels are mounted on plastic rafts on lakes or ponds and can last 20-30 years. Despite some benefits, floating solar panels are more expensive to install and pose potential ecological issues.

🍃 The State’s Cannabis Market: Celebrating its fifth year of legal recreational marijuana, Michigan has surpassed California as the top cannabis market by sales volume in the country. While California still leads the U.S. in revenue, Michigan’s low pricing resulted in more units sold than any other state.
