Apple Maps
🎥 GMA in AA: This Wednesday morning, ABC’s “Good Morning America” will broadcast live from downtown Ann Arbor. From a stage at the intersection of Ashley and Liberty, GMA hosts will celebrate the city’s 200th anniversary and highlight local downtown businesses. An ABC film crew stopped by to record at Blank Slate.
📚 New Chapter for Booksweet: Two months after going for sale, Booksweet (1729 Plymouth Road) will continue operations under new ownership. Starting today, Darcy Rhoden, her husband Casey Thacker, and other family members will take over the independent bookstore from founders Shaun Manning and Truly Render.
🏘️ End of an Era for Braun Court: Trillium Real Estate, the last holdout building in Braun Court, is now under contract with developer Wickfield Properties. Now with control of all seven properties in Braun Court, Wickfield Properties plans to knock down all buildings and build a seven-story, thirty-seven-unit condo complex in its place. Before a series of businesses closed, Kerrytown’s Braun Court was once a vibrant hub for Ann Arbor’s LGBTQ+ community.
🎸 Live Music Tracker: Due to the 4th of July falling on a Thursday, there’s no Sonic Lunch or A2 Summer Streets music this week. Live music will return next Thursday but will take the following Thursday off for the Art Fair.

MICHIGANDERS SHOULD KNOW
National Cherry Festival
🍒 National Cherry Festival: Traverse City’s National Cherry Festival is this week. The mega-popular event is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area and pump millions of dollars into the local economy. With events ranging from a Goo Goo Dolls concert to a Blue Angels air show to a pie-eating contest, the National Cherry Festival has something for everyone. Here’s a link to the festival’s events page.
🌾 Big Solar Debate: As Michigan moves towards its state-mandated renewable energy goals, requiring 60% of energy to be from renewable sources by 2035, large solar projects have begun popping up across the state. However such projects have become controversial in pockets of rural Michigan where energy providers have approached farmers about converting their land into solar farms. While land rental payments from solar or wind projects can create a much-needed source of income for farmers, some rural community members fear the change and the community’s new economic dependence on energy providers.
♻️ Record-High Recycling: According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), the state is recycling at a new record-high rate, 23%. The new rate is a significant uptick from 2019’s rate of 14.25%. The increase is largely attributed to expanded access to recycling services across the state, with Michiganders recycling substantial amounts of paper, metals, glass, and plastics last year.
