🏗️ New High-Rise: Last week, the city’s Planning Commission unanimously voted to approve a project by Landmark Properties to replace the Galleria Mall (1214 S. University Ave) with a 17-story, fully electric high-rise. The building will feature 186 apartments, nearly 4,600 square feet of retail space, and a rooftop pool deck. Construction is expected to begin in June of 2026 and be complete by August of 2028. Here’s a helpful PDF with more architecture renderings.

📚️ The Dude: U of M’s 11th President, James J. Duderstadt, passed away at the age of 81 last week. Duderstadt’s presidency from 1988 to 1996 was marked by a strong commitment to diversity, academic excellence, and the physical transformation of the campus - especially North Campus.
In his first State of the University address, Duderstadt stated, “If we do not create a nation that mobilizes the talents of all of our citizens, we are destined for a diminished role in the global community, increased social turbulence, and we will, most tragically, have failed to fulfill the promise of democracy on which this nation was founded.”
Rest in peace, Michigan Man.

🍺 Taylor Swift’s Boyfriend’s Beer: Grand Rapids’ Founders Brewing Co. is exploring a potential partnership with Garage Beer, a brand co-owned by NFL stars Jason and Travis Kelce. Although Founders has received label approval for two Garage Beer products, a spokesperson emphasized that no formal agreement has been finalized.
