ANN ARBORITES SHOULD KNOW

Apple Maps

🍔 Culver’s Coming: Culver’s is planning to redevelop the old TGIFriday’s building on Lohr Road (next to the Ann Arbor-Saline Road Meijer). A Pittsfield Township public hearing meeting has been called to consider Culver’s request to add two drive-through lanes to the location.

📱 iPads for Patients: Thanks to a new grant, nearly every child and teen at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital will have access to a bedside iPad. Loaded with more than 50 approved apps, the iPads will allow patients to play games, make art, and keep up with friends and schoolwork during their stay.

📝 GSI Class Grades: As the U of M Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) continue to strike and refuse to submit semester grades, accusations have emerged that Michigan is pressuring department chairs issue A’s for any students in GSI-led classes. The University denies the accusations.

🚨 Scared Burglar: On Wednesday, a 77-year-old Ann Arbor resident scared off a home invader by pulling a gun on him. Despite several shots being fired, the burglar was uninjured as he escaped on foot.

MICHIGANDERS SHOULD KNOW

Visit Keweenaw

💡 Lighthouse For Sale: Keweenaw’s Waterway Lower Entrance Light (a U.P. lighthouse) is being auctioned off to anyone willing to “maintain and preserve it and make it publically available for educational, recreational or cultural purposes”. Since Congress passed the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2000, 150 lighthouses have been transferred to private owners willing to look after the publically loved, but no longer commercially necessary landmarks.

🌊 Edenville Dam Catastrophe: In a new federal court filing, state attorneys argue Lee Mueller, owner of Boyce Hydro which owned the Edenville dam, knew of the dam’s structural weaknesses 10 years before the dam’s 2020 failure that resulted in $200 million in property damage and displaced more than 10,000 Mid-Michigan residents. The state attorneys argue Mueller opted to spend his money on a marina and a music festival instead of necessary safety improvements. Mueller’s attorneys argue he was dealing with financial troubles and blame the state for poorly regulating the dam.

🥔 Michigan Potatoes: Michigan is the country’s largest producer of potatoes for potato chips, but a worm-and-fungus disease threatens to kill up to half of the state’s harvest every year. Traditionally, farmers have had to combat the deadly disease with expensive pesticide treatments. However, a team of researchers at Michigan State believes they have discovered a breakthrough blend of manure and compost that could be a safe and inexpensive alternative for state farmers.

🐱 Outlawin’ Declawin’: Under a newly proposed House Bill, Michigan could become the 3rd state to ban cat declawing. Proponents of the bill argue declawing is a form of animal cruelty that results in health and behavioral problems for the cat.
