Ann Arbor News - Thursday, March 30

A fleet of rentable electric bikes, new turf fields, Guy Fieri's new restaurant, a House Bill for university stadiums to serve alcohol, and the best private schools in Michigan

Morning Ann Arbor! It's MLB Opening Day! In their preseason rankings, ESPN gave the Detroit Tigers a 1% chance to make the playoffs and a 0% chance to win the World Series. Woof. Time to prove the haters wrong.

If baseball's not your speed, here are 3 other things to know:

  • Friday - 5-Star QB Jadyn Davis announces his commitment (U of M is the favorite)

  • Saturday - Michigan Football Spring Game

  • Also Saturday - 52nd annual Hash Bash

Good luck to anyone looking for a parking spot on Saturday.

ANN ARBORITES SHOULD KNOW

Source: Spin

🚴 100 E-Bikes: After City Council's unanimous approval, a fleet of 100 rentable Spin e-bikes will soon be downtown. Spin, also the manufacturer of the 400 e-scooters around town, will share route data with the city for better mobility planning. Both the electric scooters and the electric bikes will be rentable through the Spin mobile app.

🌲 10,000 Free Trees: As part of Ann Arbor's plan to be carbon neutral by 2030 (the A2Zero program), the city is continuing its commitment to give out 10,000 trees. To date, the city has given out 3,677 trees.

👨‍🏫 GSIs Vote to Strike: For the second time in three years, GSIs (graduate student instructors) and GSSAs (graduate student staff assistants) have gone on strike. Among other points, the Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) is fighting for a 60-percent increase in pay (from $24,000 a year to $38,000 a year). Despite the strike, classes continued on Wednesday as U of M turned to substitute instructors and alternative means of instruction.

⚽️ North Campus Fields: U of M's Board of Regents approved the construction of two new turf fields on North Campus. The sports fields will accommodate intramural programs, club practices and competitions, student drop-ins, and other programs for students, faculty and staff.

MICHIGANDERS SHOULD KNOW

Source: Chicken Guy

🐓 Chicken Guy: The first Chicken Guy in the state is set to open in Livonia tomorrow. Founded by celebrity chef, Guy Fieri, Chicken Guy boasts chicken sandwiches and tenders, salad bowls, loaded fries, and mac and cheese. The Livonia location will be the first of 19 (!!) Chicken Guys planned in SE Michigan. Unfortunately, Fieri is not expected to be at the grand opening.

📸 Work Zone Speed Cameras: A newly proposed Michigan House Bill would allow for the installation of automated speeding cameras in construction zones. Introduced by House Rep. Will Snyder (D-Muskegon), the bill would ticket any drivers traveling 10 mph over the speed limit. On average, 14 Michigan road workers are killed annually by traffic accidents.

🍺 Stadium Drinks: Rep. Graham Filler (R-St. Johns) introduced a Michigan House Bill that would allow university stadiums to serve alcohol during sporting events. Under the bill, drinks could be served 1 hour before the event starts until 30 minutes before the event ends. While the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association (MLBA) has not formally approved the bill, the MLBA is supportive of universities getting licenses “with limitations”. The bill now heads to the House Regulatory Reform Committee for consideration.
