🍎 Apple Proposes Move to Arbor Hills: In a Bloomberg article, Apple sources told reporters the company plans to move its Ann Arbor store from Briarwood Mall to the Arbor Hills shopping center. While official plans, dates, and locations are subject to change, the Bloomberg report calls out a September 2024 opening date for the new store.
🚅 Railroad Bridges: An Amtrak train had to come to an emergency stop to avoid hitting a group of four individuals on the Bandemer Park railroad bridge. Ann Arbor police are reminding locals to stay off all railroad bridges and that anyone found on a bridge or jumping off a bridge into the river will be prosecuted.
🚨 Shooting on South U: U of M’s Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) reported a shooting that took place on South University late Friday night. The victim was treated for a non-life-threatening injury and the incident is still under investigation.
🌹 Townie on the Bachelorette: “Caleb A.” a 29-year-old resident physician from Ann Arbor will appear on the next season of ABC’s The Bachelorette. Caleb loves picnics, his guilty pleasure is “trash pizza”, and he has an unnamed pet salamander.

🔥 Grayling Wildfire: A 2,400-acre wildfire broke out near Grayling over the weekend closing I-75 and prompting evacuation orders. The blaze is believed to have been started by a campfire on private property. By midday Sunday, 85% of the wildfire had been contained. Due to unseasonably warm and dry conditions, much of Michigan remains at high risk for forest fires.
📉 Michigan College Enrollment: Michigan colleges and universities are struggling to get enrollment numbers back to pre-pandemic levels. Michigan colleges reported 15% fewer students enrolled in the Spring of 2023 than in the Spring of 2019 - only Alaska and Mississippi report lower enrollment percentages.
🧍♂️ Population Growth Council: Governor Whitmer named John Rakolta and Shirley Stancato as bipartisan co-chairs of the “Growing Michigan Together Council”. Designed to combat Michigan’s stagnant population growth, the 28-member council will develop strategies to attract and retain residents by improving the state’s job market, infrastructure, and education system.
🏀 New Pistons Head Coach: Monty Williams will become the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons. After being released by the Phoenix Suns on May 13, the Pistons moved quickly to sign the decorated 51-year-old head coach. While the deal's terms have not been confirmed, NBA reporters believe Williams received a 6-year, $72 million offer - the largest coaching contract in NBA history.
