🏍 Pothole Payout: The city has settled a new lawsuit filed against them over a street pothole – this one for $99,000 to Christine Harris who claims that while riding passenger on a motorcycle in May 2019, a Pontial Trail pothole caused the motorcycle to tip and severely injure her ankle. While the city settled without admitting liability, City Council recently passed a $4 million project to repair the southern portion of Pontiac Trail and neighboring streets.

🏈 Ryan Mallett: Former Michigan quarterback, Ryan Mallett, passed away in a drowning accident in the Gulf of Mexico near Destin, Florida on Tuesday. According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, Mallett went under and was not breathing by the time lifeguards pulled him out. Mallett played his freshmen season at Michigan under Lloyd Carr before transferring to Arkansas in 2008. He went on to play seven seasons in the NFL and held the head coaching position at White Hall High School since February 2022.

👩‍🔬 Material Research Funding: The National Science Foundation (NSF) has granted U of M $18 million to build a new Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). Since the 1970s, NSF’s MRSECs have been at the forefront of technological breakthroughs. U of M’s center will focus on researching materials for more efficient computing and recyclable rigid plastics, as well as aim to create opportunity pathways for students with identities often excluded from science and engineering.

🚗 Increased Car Insurance Rates: Beginning July 1, Michigan drivers should expect an increase in their auto insurance rates. Policy owners with unlimited personal injury protection (PIP) will have to pay $122 per vehicle to the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCAA) – an increase of $36 from last year. All other policy types will owe $48 after not paying anything last year. This money will go towards the same fund that reimbursed Michiganders $400 per vehicle last year due to a $5 billion surplus. However, as case law has played out following the 2019 no-fault reform, the MCAA is forced to respond to “higher-than-anticipated claims costs.”

📶 Rural Wifi: On Monday, U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-Oakland County) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) along with Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that Michigan has been awarded over $1.5 billion in federal funding to expand the state’s broadband access. The grant is part of Biden’s $65 billion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and will be supervised by the Michigan High-Speed Internet (MIHI) Office to get reliable, affordable high-speed internet to 210,000 more households, particularly those in unserved and underserved areas.

💨 Air Quality Alert: Due to the ongoing Canadian wildfires, Pure Michigan’s air hasn’t been so pure. Unfortunately, experts are predicting multi-day stretches of poor air quality will be the norm throughout the summer. Thankfully, after Detroit reported the worst air quality in the world Tuesday night, the entire state is expected to be clear by tonight.

🇺🇸 Holiday Weekend Travel: A record number of Michiganders – 1.7 million – are expected to be on the road this holiday weekend. If you’re one of them, you can expect the average gas price to be about $3.50 with prices increasing the further north you get. As far as weather goes, we’re looking at much-needed rain on Sunday and Monday, which is good news for Tuesday’s fireworks celebrations. See a schedule of the state’s shows here.
