ANN ARBORITES SHOULD KNOW

Google Maps

🍩 Dom Bakeries: According to Yelp, Dom Bakeries is the 72nd-best donut shop in the country. The family-owned Ypsilanti business made Yelp’s “Top 100 US Donut Shops” based on a number of factors but largely because of the number of high-ranking reviews it received over the past year. Avon Donuts in Pontiac also made the list at #34.

🚨 Homicide Investigation: The Ann Arbor Police Department is investigating the death of a 56-year-old Ann Arbor man as a possible homicide. Early Thursday morning police were called to 1020 Arbordale Street where they found an unresponsive male with multiple gunshot wounds. The police do not believe the incident was random.

🎥 Hidden Camera: The Ann Arbor Police Department is investigating a hidden camera found in a private jacuzzi room at The Oasis Hot Tub Gardens. The Lego-sized camera was found wedged inside a wooden sculpture by a Dearborn Heights couple.

🍷 Paesano Ownership: Paesano Restaurant & Wine Bar is changing owners from one local family to another. Opened by Bridget and Mike Roddy in 1984, the restaurant will soon be taken over by Richard Buhr and his family. The transition is taking place after a record-breaking 2022 for the Italian eatery and while on pace to break its record again in 2023. Buhr intends to maintain Paesano’s current staff and business model.

🦌 Michigan Moose Herds: Wildlife experts fear shorter, more mild winters could harm Michigan’s moose population levels. While Michigan’s moose population has remained relatively stagnant, other northern states’ herd levels have fallen sharply - Minnesota’s moose population is down 60% since 2009 and 90% of the moose calves born in Maine last winter died from moose ticks (a tick typically killed during long, harsh winters). State experts are watching the situation closely.

🍬 Michigan Pez Convention: The 6th annual Michigan Pez Convention takes place this weekend at the Delta Marriott in Farmington Hills. And if you’re surprised to learn Michigan has any relationship with Pez collecting, boy do I have a Netflix recommendation for you.

🏀 NBA Watch: Last night was the 2023 NBA Draft. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Detroit Pistons: The Pistons selected Ausar Thompson from Overtime Elite with the 5th overall pick and Marcus Sasser from the University of Houston with the 25th overall pick.

  • U of M: Jett Howard (Coach Juwan Howard’s son) was selected 11th overall by the Orlando Magic and Kobe Bufkin was selected 14th overall by the Atlanta Hawks.

  • EMU: Emoni Bates was selected 49th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
