Ann Arbor News - New Brewery In Town

Monday, July 17: Art Fair Week, new brewery, new discount store, scooter fatality, Traverse City hair salon backlash, and a Lake Michigan swim.

Morning, Ann Arbor! It’s Art Fair week. To prepare for the nearly 1,000 artists and 500,000 expected attendees, the city has temporarily reopened Main Street.

If crowds aren’t your thing, you’ll want to avoid most of downtown Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

💇‍♀️ Hair Salon Backlash: Studio 8 Hair Lab, a Traverse City hair salon, has made national headlines after the owner told trans patrons to “seek services at a local pet groomer” instead of her salon. In a now-deleted Facebook post, a co-owner of the salon stated the business would not serve anyone who identifies “as anything other than man/woman” and that trans customers “are not welcome at this salon. Period.” Since the statements, Studio 8 has been flooded with negative reviews and Traverse City has opened an investigation into the business violating its anti-discrimination ordinance.

🩺 Out-of-State Abortions: After Roe v. Wade was overturned last year and many states restricted abortion access, Michigan saw a 66 percent rise in out-of-state abortions. While Michigan has codified abortion access into law, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky have restricted or banned the procedure.

🍃 State Drug Test: Starting October 1, the state of Michigan will waive its mandatory marijuana drug test for most government roles and lift the three-year ban from any applicants who have tested positive in the past. The new policy will apply to most of the state’s 54,000 employees, but not state troopers, corrections officers, and healthcare workers - jobs that require federal testing.

🏊 Lake Michigan Swim: To raise money for free community swim lessons at Holland Aquatic Center, 50-year-old Holland resident Bryan Huffman will swim across Lake Michigan next month. Starting at Rawley Point Lighthouse (Manitowoc, WI) and ending at Big Sable Point Lighthouse (Ludington, MI), Huffman expects the 50-mile swim to take him 24 - 30 hours. Last year, Huffman swam the 37-mile span across the English Channel. Here’s a link to donate and track Bryan’s swim.
