After 20 Years, Ten Thousand Villages To Close

Morning, Ann Arbor! A lot of snow on the horizon this week. Seems like a good time to bring up the city’s live Snow Plow Tracker. Circle back to this link the next time Ann Arbor has a fresh snowfall, you’ll be able to watch Han Snowlo, Scoop Dogg, and Control Salt Delete clean up the city.

🛍️ Ten Thousand Villages to Close: After 20 years in business, Ten Thousand Villages, a fair trade artisanal and gift shop on Main Street, is closing its doors for good on March 30th. The store manager Emily Carroll said, “The way that retail has been changing over the years with people shopping online, we don’t have the same foot traffic that we used to.” Their closing sale started on February 3 and will last until March 30th.

🍺 Ann Arbor History On The Market: For the first time in 40 years, 416 4th Street is on the market. The 21,000-square-foot historic brewery (that has been home to multiple other tenants since its 1861 founding) has been occupied by the math journal Mathematical Reviews since 1983. The property is currently listed for $3.3 million.

🚣 Goodbye Midwest Niceties: Illinois has declared war on the mitten. In a satirical video, the governor of Illinois stated “a Great Lake deserves to be named after a great state. So today, I’m issuing a proclamation declaring that hereinafter, Lake Michigan shall be known as Lake Illinois.” The video was a not-so-subtle dig at President Trump’s attempted renaming of the Gulf of Mexico.

🤒 Everyone is Sick: It’s a good time to be a Kleenex salesman. While the flu is surging nationally, Michigan has been hit especially hard. So much so that a few high schools have had to close for sick days (Holy Family Catholic School in Grand Blanc and Michigan Lutheran High School in St. Joseph). To relieve the strain on the healthcare system, Charles Gibson, the chief medical officer for Corewell Health in West Michigan, advised Michiganders to use their primary care doctor or urgent care whenever possible before going to an emergency room.

👻  Ghost Students: Scammers have a new target: Michigan community colleges. “Ghost Students” is a process in which a scammer will create a fake student identity and enroll in real college classes to fabricate loan and grant applications. Community colleges are commonly targeted because they have low/no admission fees. Many community colleges in Michigan are still learning about it, but a member of the Michigan Community College Association said the association is aware of ghost student fraud and actively working to address it.
